Lunchtime Book Talk Wednesday, September 17, 2008 - 11:30 am
There will be a book talk presented by educator and book discussion leader Naomi Fishman, of People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks, an intricate, ambitious novel that traces the journey of a rare illuminated Hebrew manuscript from convivencia Spain to the ruins of Sarajevo , from the Silver Age of Venice to the sunburned rock faces of northern Australia.

Shabbat morning tefillah at Shir Hadash Reconstructionist Community is an intimate spiritual experience.  We gather at 10am at St. Louis Hillel at Washington University (6300 Forsyth).  We connect through communal prayer, song, and an often spirited Torah discussion.  Services are followed by Kiddush and sometimes a potluck lunch. The Shaare Shalom Hebrew School (a joint program of two Conservative synagogues: BSKI and Shaare Zedek) is looking for teachers for our Sunday program. We are in need of teachers for K-2 and 3-7. The available hours depend upon the grade to be taught and salary is based upon experience. Teaching assistant positions are available as well. Library help needed! The Saul Brodsky Jewish Community Library is looking for a library assistant to work on Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm. Great job for an independent worker. Responsibilities include helping patrons locate material and library circulation. The library is located on the Jewish Community Campus at 12 Millstone Campus Dr. in the Creve Coeur area. Tutoring Job Opportunity We're looking for a caring and knowledgeable person able to spend two hours daily, M-F, every school morning, to teach mishnayos and perhaps gemara to our son who will be in the 6th grade at Epstein Hebrew Academy . This will be during time that he'll be excused from regular class to learn one-on-one with his tutor. He is returning to Epstein after a three-year absence, so he is behind in his Limud HaKodesh studies. We can pay $15 per hour, which works out to $150/wk, or about $600/month. The Israel Government Fellows program (in conjunction with MASA) of the Menachem Begin Heritage Center integrates its participants as interns in various government offices together with an educational program focusing on social, economical and political issues facing Israel. It is a unique partnership between the Begin Center and the Israeli government, endorsed by the Prime Minister and other leading political and academic personalities. The program is for 22-30 year olds looking to spend an extended period in Israel that combines an internship working in a branch of the Israeli government with educational seminars and trips. Jewish Family & Children's Service is celebrating! The Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry has received great news! Thanks to a new grant from the Harvey Kornblum Foundation; the food pantry will extend its hours of operation to Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. With our new hours, we need new volunteers! With the additional hours, we will be able to help more people and better serve our existing families. We are seeking volunteers who are available weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry is located at 10950 Schuetz Road . Wanted: Volunteers! Give back to the community. The Cedars at the JCA, the local Jewish skilled nursing and rehab facility in St. Louis is always looking for smiling volunteers. Volunteers are needed to assist in activities, move residents around in their wheelchairs, visit and entertain. People interested in making a difference in the lives of Jewish older adults are needed as volunteer drivers to deliver hot kosher dinners to the homebound in the University City area. Volunteers are needed for approximately one hour on various days of the week. We are interesting in speaking with individuals, families or organizations who may wish to “adopt a day” to deliver dinners.
